Halal Sausages

Halal Sausages

Sausages – a dirty word when I was growing up because they have always been haram and made from pork and everyone knows that if you say the word “P. I. G.” your tongue will be defiled (in Urdu: “paleet” meaning ritually unclean or soiled) until you ate a banana or fish (I kid you not!). So the thought of eating sausages or even casting one’s glance on them was an abhorrent thought! Such is the conditioning that we are put through as Muslim children that until recently I was suffering cognitive dissonance with regards to halal sausages! They are sausages but they are halal, they are sausages but they are halal, they are sausages but they are halal . . . does not compute. Anyway, having got over it and having sampled some of the halal sausages on offer, I don’t have an issue any more and so “halal sausages” now computes with me!

I must say that a lot of the sausages on offer are nothing to write home about, some of the Turkish ones are passable if a bit bland and the KQF ones are OK. I have been dying to try traditional British sausages but have not been able to locate them anywhere, that is until now. The good people at Abraham Natural Produce to a selection of halal sausages that sound rather tasty, I have placed my order with them and now eagerly awaiting confirmation and delivery. There are a few varieties to choose from as well:

Garlic & Herb – Subtle background flavour of garlic.

Basil & Tomato – chopped Italian sun-dried tomatoes with sweet basil leaves.

Goan Vindaloo – a Goan speciality of Portuguese origin. Made with garam masala, chillies, garlic and ginger. Hot hot hot!

Korma Curry – adapted from the Indian dish. Contains coconut, lemon grass and Eastern spices.

Traditional British – a good old British banger.

Chiang Mai – originating from northern Thailand with coconut, lemon grass and Thai spices.

Cost: ?6.99 p/kilo & P+P

Abraham Natural Produce supply a whole host of halal meat products, organic an usual so it is worth checking out their online shop (not an ecommerce site).

  1. Assalamualaikum
I have tried to contact them via email several times to order some sausages but they haven’t replied (it has been 2 weeks now). Did you get your order or have they gone out of business?

Mas’ud: I emailed them about an order that I wanted to place. I didn’t hear anything for weeks. Then, when I got back from Hajj my sister told me that a box of meat had turned up and started to smell and go off so she threw it away. I hadn’t actually received any confirmation of the order or any request for payment so I am a bit puzzled. Hopefully someone from the company will read this and contact me about.

Just a quick update to say that I received the sausages a couple of weeks ago and they were really yummy!!

My favorites were the lamb and rosemary, and lamb and garlic.

All in all good efficient service and lovely results. It seems that all their teething problems as a company are being ironed out.

  5. Hi All,
The filling maybe halal but its the casing that worries me as these can often come from producers of non halal meat!!
This is a fact not fiction, do we really have to stoop so low as to eat sausages, could you not do without!
I suppose its o.k. to drink alcohol as well now!
If you are a muslim eat like one.
Its all about making money, and businessmen will exploit the market if they see a chance.
Where are we heading, Allah help us and forgive us.

Mas’ud says: Firstly, I have no idea how you have made the jump from eating sausages that are made from halal meat (beef, chicken, lamb) to drinking alcohol, that is patently absurd. Then your utterly preposterous statement about stoop so low as to eat sausages, what is all that about?

As for the sausage casing, the people I have purchased halal sausages from use all halal products. Answer this question: Is it haram for an entrepreneur to identify a market and offer a halal alternative? Not one thing you have said actually made any sense or in anyway stands up to what is permissible and what is forbidden in Islam.

  6. A good pal of mine tells the very same story, that of a young Bangladeshi, growing up in Scotland and desperate to enjoy the great British Banger experience but not daring to eat non halal.

He’s now setting up his own halal sausage company at http://www.serioussausage.co.uk – I’m not even going to pretend I know much, if anything, at all about Islam but wish him all the best. Clearly there is a market for halal sausages.

  7. Well said Mas’ud, some ppl are so weird, making up their own conclusions and then trying to force their opinions on others.

Btw cool blog Imma buy some HALAL sausages now 🙂

  8. I am from the Carribbean and would to know where can I get halal sausage casing to buy from.Lookin to start a small business. Make Dua.
